Parts scam operation ?

Hi, My earlier posting seeking a pair of brake shoes brought forth some strange replies from non-members, seeking my address, phone number, and bank details. The people concerned clearly hadn’t a clue what the brake shoes look like, and they were wanting payment by Western Union. The alarm bells in my grey matter started ringing very loudly, and I wonder if any other members have been contacted by a ‘Daniele Marco’ , or a ‘Glenn Hardy’ ?

Hi Brian,
I don’t know “the gentleman” concerned, but I have had several similar “offers” by similar persons when I have advertised for spares. Just to irritate them, I sometimes ask for photographs of the items, and their home address. Often they will give you a clearly fake home address, but they will never offer you any photos. It seems that they always will ask for payment through Western Union, which may point towards African countries.
It sounds definitely like a scam operation. Caveat Emptor!! Alarm bells? Definitely.

Thanks Brian – as general point it’s worth remembering that the public area of this forum is completely public. The ‘members’ area is more private. Whichever part of the forum you use then please ensure you are confident the other person you are in contact with is who they say they are before giving any details, also be sure whatever you write in your message (phone numbers etc.) you are content to broadcast – remember nearly half the World’s population (in theory at least) can see this website ! The internet is both wonderful and scary…
