petrol tank

can any one tell me when they reduced the length of the petrol tank to 23 1/2″ between bolt holes. was it when they went to a single filler cap. or before.

Hi Eric, Between 1931 and 1933 the Flying Squirrel used the single downtube frame. The duplex frame was reintroduced in late 1933, for the 1934 ‘season’ but the frame geometry was different from that used between late 1928 and late 1933. (The duplex frame was retained for the TT Replica only 1931-1933). So the answer to your question is late 1933 onwards, and nothing to do with twin-filler to single-filler tanks.

Thanks Brian the reason I asked is that the wide tank I have witch I thought was late 30s is nearly 3″ longer than my frame

Other points to watch are that the early parallel-sided vintage Flyer tank fits in a slot in the TOP of the saddle lug, whereas the later flared-sides tanks fit in the UNDERSIDE of that lug, and firms like AE Reynolds offered tanks to ‘modernise’ earlier models. Do you know the year that your frame comes from ?
