Pilgrim pump

Has anyone had experience of using a Pilgrim pump that has been converted to run as a dripper? Good points and any problems experienced.

Hello Dave, my 1930 Rep. has a Pilgrim pump that was modified to drip feed by Gerry Howard many years ago and I am very happy with it. Just for the record my other two Scotts are on the more conventional Best and Lloyd type droppers, if you are a stickler for originality the modified Pilgrim is the way to go.As I have mentioned before in discussions on oiling if drippers were good enough for the late Jim Best they are good enough for me. I’ve just sent a Pilgrim pump to Ged Rumble for him to convert to non-driven dripper action, the third one he has done for me. The only thing you have to remember is that the adjuster knobs then work in the opposite direction !

I have a pilgrim converted to a dripper on my B’ham Scott but would appreciate some guidance on the correct setting, i.e. how many drips per minute. Can anyone advise please.

Hi Roy, Six to eight drips per minute in each sight-well at a fast tickover should be fine.

Would 6 or 8 drops per minute be correct for a pilgrim pump fitted with a reduction gear as well ?
I have almost completed the restoration of my ’49 Flyer and will be fitting one of Gerry Howards reduction gears and I need to know what sort of setting
I should be looking for when I first start it !

Subject to Mr Marshall agreeing, divide 6 to 8 by three equalling two pulses to one drip

with a GH reduction gear. Regards.

The actual amount of oil required by the engine is the same no matter the way it is delivered. Suction/dripper systems do not give the pulses, (attempted drips) that a Pilgrim pump does.

So Brian, your saying I need the same 6 – 8 drops per minute with the reduction gear fitted.
The reduction gear just makes it easier to set the pump to achieve that rate of delivery , Is that correct ?

Thanks for the responses re the Pilgrim “dripper” modification. As there seem to be no negative responses, I shall be going ahead and fitting the one in my possession.

It is important that the sight feed spaces are open to atmosphere and that no suction is allowed to effect the drip side. If no “nicks” are present on the edges of the window frame lay a piece of thin wire under the window to allow air in.

There are normally two small breather holes (one for each well) in the body of the pump, and the edge of the ‘window frame’ partly hides the holes. Just make sure that they are clear.
