Gents, perhaps you might assist an idiot ( me) .
Getting to grips with the 35 TT Rep. but, I’m having trouble shifting down from 3rd to second gear smoothly. Itshand change and I fear it’s my terrible technique, not the gearbox. Going up is fine, second to first, well, that’s only really if I stop. I close the throttle, retard the ignition and still can’t always get it to snick in.
What am I doing wrong? Feel free to harangue, every day is a school day, after all!

Hi there, my only suggestion is this: if you are sure your clutch is freeing OK maybe it’s just that you have a wide ratio box which makes it difficult to avoid clashing the dogs when changing down, at least that has been my limited experience. Have you checked the gear adjustment by peering in through the filler? Put it in 2nd, the pinions should be exactly in line (and that means exactly). Is there enough oil in the box and not too much? Also badly adjusted chains can afffect gearchanging though I can’t imagine any Scott owner being slipshod enough to have that problem…
I am sure some of our gurus will have more advice,
Enjoy it, they are good fun, Richard
Rather than closing the throttle and retarding the ign (why?) I’d do the opposite and blip the throttle, just you do on any old bike or car with little more than a crash gearbox.
Ah, but how do I blip the throttle change gear and hold the clutch in at the Same Time? See my problem?
I’ll check gear alignment, but of course my chains are perfect. Honest.

With the hand-change box there is little or no need to use the clutch when changing up, but changing down, especially at higher revs, does benefit from using the clutch, especially with the wide-ratio box. The ‘old school’ riders would use their LEFT hand, across the tank, to change gear, but this is not so easy with wider Rep tank, compared to the earlier vintage slim Flyer tank. Another old way to change up without having to ease back the throttle was to briefly use the magneto kill switch instead. This however tends to cause loud bangs in the exhaust ! Why are you using the advance and retard lever ?
Desperation!
This works for me ( mostly ) I ajust the throttle lever or twistgrip so that they do not self close on the downward change I do not fully close the throttle then hand on gear lever I dip the clutch the revs rise move into lower gear and drop the clutch .this is at your own risk it takes practise . On presenting the beast for m o t slacken off controls to self close, How to turn right with a self closing throttle giving a hand signal this old duffer has yet to discover .Regards D F .
😀 😀 😀 FWIW Here’s what I do…..I thrash it in top to the crossroads in top gear. Pull in the clutch and blip the throttle. Then while the engine settles back just snick it into 2nd!! Silent change and a wide grin on the face as I lean it into the bend.. Then i do the left handed clutch-less change into third a la Titch Allen… But hey that’s just me!!!! Regards Ted 😀 😀 😀
