Whilst rebuilding a clutch, I realised that the button inserts of friction material were well worn and quite a few were loose. They were of the old Ferodo type that contain bits of copper (?) wire and ASBESTOS (!), so I removed them and cleaned up the chainwheel. When you look at them you realise that they are more hole than metal, if you get my drift, and I wondered if it would be possible to convert it to continuous discs of bonded-on friction material as there was so little metal around all the holes. I phoned up SAFTEK in Cleckheaton, and they confirmed that it was perfectly OK because they fill in all the holes with some epoxy type compound before bonding on the friction discs back and front. So….I sent it off to Saftek, and four days later it was back in my hands, job done. The cost was just £24-00, including postage and packing, which I think is VERY good value in this day and age.
I hope that this will help a few others put worn-out old clutches back into service. Usual disclaimers.
And Yes, I am still wanting a pressure plate. Surely somebody has got one to spare !?
