Has anyone had experience of a carburettor re-sleeved by Martin Bratby (or anyone else). I’m wondering if it’s money well spent.
I sent a carb to Martin for Carl Stormer and it was a good job. He then did another for a customer in USA which also was good. Long delivery time, but then who am I to comment on that!
I saw a carb that Roy Fisher had had reconditioned by
Bill Harley

A good job and at a low price that was hardly fair to Bill Harley
Don’t get me wrong, I do not believe in fleecing folks, but the price should be in proportion to the work done. If not the suppliers give up and we are left searching around for another. Kind Regards Roger

In the past Martin has resleeved amac carbs for me.Always a very good job for a reasonable price and will also replace as a matter of course, springs, cable adjusters etc if he considers them not in perfectly serviceable condition…Adrian
Thanks for the quick answers chaps. I had never heard of Bill Harley. Perhaps I’ll give him a ring as well.
I will wholeheartily recommend Martyn Bratby. He has now rebuilt 4 carburettors for me, and they are all perfect. He has all the necessary parts, and those he doesn’t have, he will make. His prices are reasonable, and delivery times are OK.
I was about to post a carb. to Roy Dagger, who advertises in OBM. He doesn’t resleeve the carb. but fits an oversize slide that he makes from whatever you supply, I presume he skims the carb. body at some point in the process. You would have to send two slides if you wanted to be able to swop from a 6/4 to a 6/3. Since the carb. is going on an engine that Roger has breathed on I thought it a good idea to be able to experiment. Obviously the slides would be of no use in any other carb. If I have the carb. resleeved then I can use standard Amal slides. This is a long winded way of asking if the other gentlemen mentioned actually resleeve or fit oversize slides. Jeff Reed.
This certainly isn’t my field of engineering but I would have thought that one would have to re-sleeve the body to achieve worthwhile results, especially if the engine has been “done” to such a high standard. My engine is with with Roger as well which is why I thought the carb should receive some attention.
As you rightly surmised Bill Harley bores the carb and fits and oversize slide. On my carb he duplicated the standard slide that I supplied (I can’t remember offhand, 6/2 or 6/3?) but it was an excellent job. The carb has behaved perfectly but as you say it’s not possible to experiment with different slides. The up side is that he charged £25.00 for the job (this was about 2 years ago.
