Hi,
I’ve finally got around to restoring a 1929 flyer after purchasing it 30 years ago !!!.(Having a family in between)
I’m just researching the engine and wish to replace the rings as part of the rebuild.
The engine no is FY 835A . I assume this is a short stroke engine
Is the bore the same on the short stroke as on the long stroke ?c
What should the original bore be as I have spare barrels which could be standard
(ps mine is 60 thou over) and where is the best place to get rings.
Any help on the year of the engine would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Whilst your engine number suggests a 596cc shortstroke Flying Squirrel, over the years it could have been converted to a 498cc by swapping cylinder barrels, and it could even have been converted to longstroke, or a hybrid mix of the two. You therefore need to measure the bore size very carefully. I should be able to supply rings to suit your engine. Whereabouts are you? If anywhere nearish to me you could bring your engine over to make sure that I’ve got the right parts. I also have all gaskets and lots of engine , clutch, and gearbox parts for vintage three-speed Scotts.

Is there a recommended kit or method to seal the crank shaft at the gland face ?

I’m not quite sure what you mean about the sealing of glands….Are you saying that your gland faces are too scored to seal properly? If so, they can be lapped in to restore the surface, provided that the damage is not too bad, and of course it is the incoming fresh oil that in theory keeps the metal surfaces apart and provides the gas-tight seal. Or perhaps you were saying that you wanted to replace the glands with modern neoprene seals? If so I would suggest that you take your engine to a Scott specialist like Ian Pearce or Roger Moss as they have the tooling and experience to do the job properly, ie. ensuring that the vital crank end float clearance is maintained. There have been various articles in “Scott Technicalities” explaining how to do it but you do need some precision engineering skills to do the job properly.

OK I understand, its my ignorance, I assumed there was some form of seal across the faces but its the Oil that creates the seal
