Further to the Flotsam and Jetsam topic, this is not a ‘for sale’ or a ‘wanted’ ad., more of a ‘swap’ sort of thing.
I picked up my roller starter today, which I recently bought from an ex-motorcycle person and, I must say, I am rather impressed with it.
It is the type that uses the drive wheel of a car/van or even another bike (possibly) to operate it.
There are two very substantial 80mm plus diameter rollers, each slightly over 2m in length.
The rollers house the bearings which slot into two very substantial floor brackets, which can be either bolted to the garage floor or perhaps used in a field somewhere.
One of the rollers also has a sprocket drive for a chain together with a drive for a belt, so that an electrical motor can be utilized to drive it if required.
Having very limited space in my garage, I was intending to have the rollers shortened to about 450mm and use an electric motor permanently (as a drive, that is).
However, it is a rather nice bit of very substantial kit and if anyone would like to have a portable roller facility (it comes apart for ease of transportation and should fit into the boot of an average car) at shows or races (or anywhere else, for that matter) and they have a smaller electric motor type starter, which they would part with, I would be happy to swap it plus cash (amount to be agreed).
If not, I will proceed with my initially intended proposal ; it would be a bit of a shame though.

ps Thinking about it, a pair of 2m drilled spacer bars might be required to retain the brackets, if the unit is required for field use.
OK. So nobody interested.
The first thing is to try and reduce the heavy duty 2m long rollers to 300mm, so that the unit fits into my garage.
This might be a bit of fun!

As my ‘car operated’ roller starter is simply too big to fit permanently into my small garage and too good to mess about with, I have decided to buy a small battery operated unit.
If anyone is interested in mine, before I put it on Ebay, let me know.
The unit has two 2m long rollers, which are bolted into two very robust brackets (for transportation, it can be dismantled easily into four pieces and re-bolted together when required for use) ; dismantled, it fitted easily into the boot of my wife’s Toyota Yaris.
The unit is operated by driving the rear drive wheel of your car/van onto it ; the previous owner used it to start his motorcross bikes at races.
It also has a sprocket on one roller (and facility for a belt on the other) for operation by an electric motor if required.
Photographs upon request.

I think I’m quite lucky in that all my bikes have this little lever down on the right hand side of the gearbox, and when I whang it down with my leg, the engine (usually) bursts into life.
Must be a right faff taking both a car and rollers out with you every time… 😀
Well, good for you then!
Looks like this.

Well, Alan Noakes’ portable roller starter arrived today and, I must say, it’s a bit of a bargain at £450.
A £24 battery from Ebay and it’s up and running.
If you are in the market for a portable battery operated roller starter, I would recommend Alan’s.
My larger car wheel operated paddock roller starter will now go in the Velocette Owners Club magazine, as quite a few of them race their bikes.
