As far as I am aware all Scott barrels pre war were polished & lacquer put on,I certainly had two detachable head barrels that I know were original,one well used long stroke one had turned a pale brownish colour.the other a short stroke (yes a short stroke detachable head one )was brand new ex Shipley and was still a lovely colour.
To get the correct finish on your barrel polish it as best you can & apply a mixure of (oil based) artists alizarin crimson. with a good heat resisting varnish,You will need to put about two or three blobs of the red about the size of a pea with about two or three table spoons of varnish,you will probably need a couple of coats–rub down between coats — Potty_
