Cheffins have for sale at auction tomorrow an engine described as “c 1925 Scott twin cylinder watercooled engine in line type with the flywheel mounted outboard of the engine.” There is a photo and the engine no. is HIOOD RCM 183

Hello again,
The yesterday’s message should have read:-
“Don’t recognise this one – it’s nothing like a Sociable engine , where the flywheel was central, and enclosed in the large unit construction crankcases/gearbox casting, whilst the two cylinders were separate castings.”

I passed a copy of the photo to John Underhill at yesterday’s SOC AGM; he will do a bit of research, as neither the picture nor the engine number rang any bells.

Many, many years ago I was building a sailing cruiser and there was a lightweight auxiliary engine called, (I think), a “Watermotor”, Swedish made(?), that I looked at but could not afford. Now it was a very long time ago and I never got my hands on one but my memory says it looked a bit like this one.

I can assure everyone that this engine was never made by scott, or even Matt Holder who made a scott like marine engine called a Bermuda I believe. Being the owner of a Hogan RCA engined DOT I can recognise this engine as a developement of my air cooled unit, Peter Hogan and the RCA company went on to produce the Dolphin yacht engine which this engine is, the company is still in business situated in Bodmin. PS back in the 1960s Peter Hogan took the hydroplane championship 2 years running with one of these engines it developed 45 BHP at 9000RPM.
