Please does anybody have any opinions of the flying squirrel that is on ebay at the moment regarding price and originality. I have been looking for a decent Scott of around this era for quite a while now and may go to view this one at the weekend if it is still available. Any of your views would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Jonathan
Well at first glance it looks smart and well cared for, BUT there are a lot of non-original details, including the following:-
Wrong handlebars and control levers.
Wrong rear mudguard and stays.
Wrong rear number plate.
As a short-stroke engined Flyer it should have a front ‘coffeepot’ expansion chamber and a left-hand exhaust pipe to a ‘Howarth’ silencer and alloy fishtail outlet, so all the exhaust is wrong.
The headlight brackets are a modern fabrication.
The radiator looks odd as the filler neck shouldn’t be at that angle, and the ‘Limit Gauge’ logo is missing from the ends of the top section.
The battery is missing from the L/H end of the magneto platform.
The brake pedal has been modified, and as a hand-change bike, the brake pedal should be on the R/H side of the bike.
The rear of the cylinder water-jacket has been patched.
The toolbox is missing.
The front splash shield is missing.
The tank side panels are the wrong colour and lack the correct transfers.
The rear stand clip is missing.
Why is the registration plate blank ? Has the original reg been sold off ?
The “Firestone Remould” rear tyre must be donkey’s years old, age hardened, and therefore unsafe for use. It could easily be 50 years old !!
All these things can be put right, but it would be a very expensive exercise.
You could enjoy it as it is, but it is far from standard spec..
The ‘lost’ reg GW8844 was next to a bike I owned about 25 years ago, GW8845!!, but mine was a “Flying Squirrel Sports Model”, with longstroke TT Rep type engine, and Webb forks rather than Brampton Monarch. It had a two-inch left-hand siamesed exhaust pipe like a Rep or Sprint Special.

Thank you very much for you prompt reply. I think will not persue this in light of your information. I am looking for a Scott of around this year but in a more original specification at a similar price. My father told me me of the Scotts being test ridden past the family home on Carlton Road Saltaire and as a life long motorcyclist I think it is about time for a Scott. I have a Suzuki t500 in the garage at the moment and a BSA super rocket of 32 years ownership plus too many random others. My search for an early thirtys’ Scott is ongoing and any leads or help regarding the purchase of a Scott would be very much appreciated. Many thanks Jonathan Dow
