I have a Scott Squirrel-type horn cover which I bought at the Annual gathering in September with a view to fitting on my 1936 Flyer although it does not have a horn at present. I am now looking to buy the horn to go with it . Can anyone tell me what make of horn the cover fits ? Hopefully I will then avoid buying the wrong type! Thanks.
The correct horn for a 1936 Squirrell was made by Klaxxon. These horns are very difficult to find, and when found very expensive. One was sold on e-bay a year ago for £280 if I remember correctly. Your horn cover will only fit the Klaxxon – it will regrettably not fit a Lucas Altette.
Kind regards,
Carl
Thanks for the (not so ) good news, Carl !
Have a look at eBay item 130069511160
Absolutely incredible, thank you. Watch the bidding develop now !
Hi Lewis,
I have looked at the French Klaxon at e-bay. I am not completely convinced that it will fit the Scott cover. Check dimension and the number of mounting screw-holes in the front. Good luck!

Lewis, the Klaxon on eBay mentions 24 V. I think most Scotts prefer 6 volt instead of 24 volts !
A valid point Lewis! Another classic case of if all else fails read the instructions!!! If it was cheap enough though and you can get inside it could always be rewound. It’s not exactly a rocket science job.
Never had any dealings with them but what about classic-car-accessories.co.uk anything there any use?
Of course you can rewind it but who needs a horn on a Scott anyway? With the 112 Db my Scott produces, no horn can compete…
So 24V is just as decorative as 6v one…
;o)

Ah ! I had let myself get carried away a bit there – but rewinding/re construction might be an option. Alternatively I will go along with what Erik has to say and fit it merely for show. Then I suppose that I will have to carry on fitting my one servicable bulb horn to this bike (and each of my bikes alternatively) at MOT times !!
Contrary to what was posted earlier, the Squirrel type horn covers will fit Lucas Altette horns. I have two Scotts fitted thus. Although both horns are Altettes, they are different models. One has a rounded back and the other a later type flat back. One cover is an original and is fitted to the round back Altette and the other is one of the pattern types that was cast from my original.

More news on the horn front. I have contacted Lynn Isaac aka Taff the Horns via his website (http://www.taffthehorns.com) and he has provided a rapid and interesting response, part of which I will reproduce here:
The Scott was the only Brit Bike to actually use one of the New Jersey Registered fm 1909 Klaxon outfit’s Klaxon KIFO. these were produced for Europe in France fm circa 1930 right up to the 2nd WW, the Registered office 1 Ru de Rue, when after WW2 the French tried to raise hard currency, it was opposed vehemently by all BRITISH Manufacturers & Klaxon Kifo had to be imported to Claude Rye Deeprose Marble Arch Elrico Hobday & Pride & Clark, for sale as Desmo, & Prima in USA for a fraction of what a Lucas Altette costs, they were better hooters too albeit not as hermetically resilient to weather!. their Import Reg was Holland Park London W1, rarely can the old brass tab be found so a London one may be needed.Lynn (or Taff) has KIFO parts available from which he can build 6v Scott horns, although I do not have a price at present. He is quoting 4 months to complete but does not require payment until after dispatch, receipt and approval of a horn.
In passing Lynn has some other very interesting sites concerning vintage racing in Wales , which I can recommend as completely absorbing. The sites can be accessed via the horn site and that concerning sand racing includes at least one picture of a Scott at races on Oxwich Sands in the late 20’s.
Whilst sorting out car items in my garage, I today came across a box of spare m/c horns, some of which I have examined & measured, so offer the following comments.
I do not recognise the item on Ebay.
The 1930’s Klaxon horn fitted behind the Scott Squirrel casting would carry a brass plate “KLAXON LTD, 38, BLANDFORD ST., LONDON W.1.” , with a serial number, possibly, N ????? . The housing behind the front plate mounting is very deep at 2 inch.
An original Scott Squirrel casting will fit over a LUCAS ALTETTE horn with minimal modification, as Dave Bushell has indicated.
Assuming the new SOC Scott squirrel castings will also fit over a 4 1/2 inch diam. horn, there should be no problem.
If you are serious in looking for an original Klaxon, I will happily photograph it and email it to you, my email address is in YOWL,
