I was just searching photos for the work I’m doing now and by coincidence I found this photo of the Scott Machine Gunner with Russian soldiers in the great war. Interesting photo, nice to find it just in the time of amazing articles in Yowl.

I emailed the site owners some time ago asking permission to reproduce them in Yowl but never received a reply. I would like to obtain further information as it is unclear when the photos were taken – although obviously prior to the 1917 Revolution – and I have little other information concerning the deployment of Scott Machine guns to Russia. I assume that those shown were some of those which were originally sent to France in 1914/15 with the Motor Machine Gun Service. The MMGS was amalgamated into the Machine Gun Corps in October 1915 so my best guess is that the photos are from 1916.

Hi Lewis,

thanks for the link, this is very interesting. It would be interesting to know, if some of those Scotts survived somewhere in Russia. Probably not, but miracles can happen…
As far as I have informations, there is some postcard from Moscow Scott enthusiast from February 1910 reproduced in Jeff Clew’s book, it would be interesting to know if there was some dealer selling the Scotts (or other British bikes) to Russia before the WWI? Could be there some contract between the countries?

I just got two links to the Russian web sites, where are some 1st WW photos of the motorcycles in the Russian army and there are some other Scott photos, so in case you don’t know this, here are the links:

I also got email to some guy who knows some knowledge about the war technique from the period, I’ll try to ask him in case he knows a bit more, I’ll write the infos in case I find something more.
