Hi, I have a 1928 Squirrel, I just had the magneto rebuilt, I have set the ignition up as per the book i.e. points just opening at TDC / fully retarded, points gap as per book. New plugs fitted.
Despite re-timing it / checking it runs irregularly / spits back when you open the throttle , made slightly better when you close the choke. It was running perfectly before I had the mag done – any suggestions – alternative timing settings ?

check the carb is clean ,as you must of had the bike laid up for some time while the mag was being rebuilt.
Check the mag slip ring is in the correct position eg under the ht pick up at the firing point 
Make sure that your petrol is NEW. The stuff goes off very quickly, especially in this hot weather, with the vital low-boiling fractions being lost through the petrol cap vent hole. I would NEVER set the timing like that. I always set it at 5/16,” or a little less, Before Top Dead Centre on full advance. Good luck !
The book way does work ,but as I said just check the slipring timing as it has been known for the wrong rotation ring to have been fitted

I’ve heard of people doing that but to me it seems wrong, unless you’re very “in tune” with your engine when riding.
You need a fixed fully advanced position…the fully retarded isn’t important as you don’t ride with the timing in that area.
😀 😀 😀 re Spitting back.. Many years ago (2 speeder time) I went around the same course of actions re timing etc.. I then had a chat with the late Tich Allen who said “Check the guazes in the transfer ports”.. This I duly did. Both guazes were holed thro old age and blowback.. I replaced them and Lordy Lordy! no more problems!! Just a thought however.. regards to all .. Ted 😀 😀 😀
Certain engines, all short-stroke, were prone to this problem, which nothing obvious seemed to cure, and for no obvious reason either. Gauzes were fitted to problem engines across the inlet stub and the transfer ports. The late Tom Wess had a 1928 Flying Squirrel that was totally original, with the engine untouched from new. I watched as Tim Sharpe opened it up, and the gauzes were intact but blocked by a layer of long-dead mixed insects, bits of straw, and feathers…
Many thanks all, it appears through much fiddling the timing appears bespoke to this bike, at the recommended full advance (5/16th btdc) it runs perfectly, retard it and it spits back. I’ve looked down the inlet tract and can’t see any gauzes – where are they located ? The bike ran perfectly before the mag was rebuilt. As the bike was allegedly raced it might have been subject to some internal modification ! Thanks again, will see how I get on with running it slightly over advanced as it appears pretty happy like this !
Gauzes were fitted across the transfer port openings, replacing the usual TP gaskets. Sometimes one would also be fitted between the carburettor body and the crankcase. I suppose that the latter would also stop ‘foreign bodies’ from getting into the engine. I have a few of both sorts in an old tobacco tin somewhere. It’s quite a fine mesh…

I’ve just stripped a 1927 engine with a Binks carb that has all the gauzes fitted, so here is a photo to show and yes I’ve just dropped the barrel on backwards just for the photo for those who noticed..
NEVER seen them on the exhaust ports, and can’t see the point of that at all. I’d have thought the red hot exhaust gases would have frazzled them in no time. Apparently not…

Just on the inlets Brian, I just dropped the barrel on for the position of gauzes and it wasn’t until i loaded the photo id realised the barrel was on backwards, 😳 😳 never mind, interesting transfer port casting required and a special exhaust 🙄 🙄
Do you have a good spark from the mag in both full advance and full retard??
Remove both spark plugs and put a “test” spark plug on one of the leads (but don’t leave the other lead in thin air – either earth it or attach another plug) and open the “test” plug a bit at a time observing the spark being generated in both advance and retard positions. If you get a good spark on full advance with a relativey large gap but not on full retard, suspect the mag.
This is because a “poor” mag can give a lesser spark as the cam ring is rotated to retard the ignition timing – as providing an advance/retard by this method is a bit of a compromise anyway. Allow me to explain.
Disregarding the actual ignition timing (i.e. when the spark occurs relative to piston position), the mag has an “internal” timing – which is where the armature is relative to the magnet(s) to provide the greatest voltage being induced into the primary winding of the armature as the points open.
The magneto is designed to give the optimum internal timing at full advance, so by moving the cam ring to retard the ignition also alters this “internal” timing – so if the mag is a bit dickey, it will give a poorer spark with the cam ring in the retard position. That might be the cause of your spitting back. Just a thought.

I have a theory on spitting back, it is quite technical but I think feasible. The exhaust port opens slightly before the transfer port,it’s called the exhaust lead. It has to, causing the exhaust gases to escape in the right direction. On a long stroke engine, the port timing is approximately transfer 125 degrees and exhaust 150 degrees fully open. We are only working on the power stroke here, so the exhaust lead is about 12 degrees. This can vary a bit due to the rubber limit gauge!
On a short stroke engine, all approximate, the transfer is 131 degrees the exhaust is 150 degrees fully open, so giving a much shorter exhaust lead of 9.5 degrees. It doesn’t seem much until you look at the times the ports are actually open. On a short stroke at 4300rpm, the exhaust port is open for only 0.0058139 seconds and the transfer port 0.0050775 seconds giving an exhaust lead of 0.000368 seconds, not much time for the exhaust gases to decide which way to go. A slight variation giving a slightly higher transfer port or lower exhaust port can really confuse the exhaust gases so causing spitting back. I do know that port sizes vary slightly from standard given sizes. I think the spitting back on short stroke engines is because the exhaust lead is critical.
