I’ve just read a very interesting and well-researched five page article about Silks, with some background Scott information, in the November/December 2010 issue of Motorcycle Classics. This is a good quality American magazine that has limited sales in the UK, but well worth searching for this issue!
Many thanks to Les Allsop for the gift of the magazine.
It does sound interesting, but sadly I cannot get that magazine here in the sticks (outside the M25..!). I recently arranged with the IMechE to allow the SOC to publish a couple of articles online in the members section with no copyright fees, how would you fancy your chances of asking the magazine for such rights to copy the article for the club archives and membership?
Editor of Motorcycle Classics, Richard Backus, reports that they do not own the rights to the article on the Silk. The rights are held by the author, Phillip Tooth, a professional writer (used to be the editor of BOTH Classic Bike and The Classic Motorcycle). Perhaps someone knows Mr. Tooth and can approach him for a copy?
Richard said that the magazine is available in some newsstands in the UK, and by subscription. We can use his riding impression of my ’27 from 2009, either by link or reprint (with proper attribution). Not nearly as good a story as the Silk article though.
He did offer to come to Texas and write something on my Scott, after the install of the Moss motor currently underway. We will have to find a good deserted road to prove up the top speed 🙂
