Hi all, The TT Rep that I bought in July is missing the double-helix Thackeray (Thackery ?) washer that preloads the handchange gearlever pivot. It is 3/4″ bore. Has anyone got one to spare please ? Or can anyone advise a source of supply ? I’m sure that I have faced this problem on a previous occasion, (July 2013), but I can’t remember the outcome !

Hi Brian, sorry I cannot help – but if you find a supplier of these washers I need two, one for my current road bike and one for a project. I have spent some time looking on the internet, but not found a supplier of these washers. Regards Steve.
Yes Steve, this is a rerun of the quest a couple of years ago when I was looking for one for WX179, my 1929 works TT bike. I did get one, but can’t remember where from, which is annoying ! A job lot for the Spares Scheme would be great, but little chance I suppose. I’ll probably end up cutting a couple of turns off a normal compression spring, then grind flats on the ends so that they sit snugly without chewing up the gear lever.

Brian the green spark plug co have thackery washers, he may know where you can get the size you need
Thanks Eric. I’ll phone Tim Green and ask if he has some. Colin Heath has suggested not bothering with the Thackery spring washer, and just using plain washers to take up the end float on the pivot, relying on the spring in the gearlever blade to accommodate the opposing positions in the ‘notches’ in the gate.
Gents,
Re Thackery washers. See https://www.polished-stainless.com (which is Surplus Supplies tel. 01636 636735) See menu on left. At bottom click on ‘Everything Else’. Scroll down to Double Helix Spring Washers. He list a 3/4″ double helix steel. Might be worth a ring. I have had excellent service from them. Usual disclaimer.

I have had a chat with Mike Peters at Surplus Supplies, and he has some 3/4″ID Thackrey washers in phosphor bronze that he will take to the autojumble at Newark for me to have a look at with a view to buying them. From his description I think they may be too meaty for the job, but I’ll report back when I’ve seen them.

Have you had a look at https://www.boltnuts.net/Double-Coil-Thackery-Washer-p162.htm This may be what you are looking for.

Hi Charlie, from the photos they look to be a heavy gauge item. The one on a Scott handchange pivot is a very light gauge, that you can compress quite easily between finger and thumb. Thank you for trying to assist.
