tank/John Bull rubbers on 1929 Squirrel

I am about to get my tank re painted for my 29 squirrel, can any one confirm the tank colour is black with cream diamond on top (with badge) sides cream (with badge) and red pin stripes? but, I am confused about the knee rubbers on the side of the tank, I have John Bull rubbers each side attached to an oval plate, but can’t see if there was a painted side panel? if there was, where does it go? as there does not seem room. also it would be hard to fit the scott badge in. The tank is original two chamber petrol and oil, under the rubber is an original oval plate which is held on with studs coming out of a brass disc attached to the tank, so it all looks correct, but I cant see how I can fit the panel ,rubber, and badge in? or are the sides just black? if that’s the case does anyone know where to get new rubbers. thanks to all John Francis

Hi, I presume you mean Flying Squirrel as the Squirrel model went out of production in around 1926, and was superceded by the Super Squirrel. The 1929 Flying Squirrel didn’t have kneegrips as standard, but many were fitted later by owners or ordered as an accessory from new. Various companies make repro’ John Bull kneegrips. See previous articles in ‘Technicalities’ for shape and colour of tank panels and ‘coachlines’.

Thanks for that Brian, yes I mean the Flying Squirrel, If they were fitted as a factory accessory. would the tank still have a cream sidepanel and would the knee pad cover both the cream and the black? as the knee pad is to high to sit within the cream panel only, again thanks for the advice, John

Yes, I’m sure that tanks would have been painted before any fitting of kneegrips. The position of the grips would vary according to an owner’s requirements, leg length, etc.. The mounting studs/discs were soldered in place, which would require removal of a small area of paint back to bare metal, and VERY careful soldering to avoid melting the nearest soldered seam in the tank.
