Yipee , thanks for all the help. The reason it was no delivering a spark over the whole range of advance and retard was that fully retarded the HT pickups were missing the tail end of the brass on the slip ring, so it will now start quite easily when fully retarded as opposed to the effort of starting fully advanced PHEW !.
I think the new slip ring must be slightly misaligned or its the wrong type. I manged to get it contacting over the full range by experimenting with the points gap, its not the correct gap , its a fudge. I’ve not run it on the road so there may be consequences , but hopefully its progress. thanks again I suspect my next post will be about the binks carb !

If you get in touch with Bill at Brightspark magnetos he will send you the correct slip ring as he did for mine, then you can do a comparison. Don’t forget the drive rotation is from the driven end, so mag-dyno driven from engine sprocket will be clockwise.

Just check the points are the right rotation also.

So pic on left is clockwise points but anti clock on driven end, the pic on right is anti clock points but clockwise on the driven end, (this is how yours should look assuming you have the drive chain to the engine and not the clutch drum). You do not want to be running it too much with wide open points. Kev
