two speed kichstart chain

Hi all,

I am returning the kickstart linkage on my 1926 super to standard, my question is this: is there an ideal length for the chain part of it? I shall be making a new 1/4″ rod so that can be any length required. All advice appreciated,

To confuse you, see the attached photographs. Top is a new Ken Lack example and bottom salvaged from a wreck.

I think that you can have as much chain as is necessary to wrap around the drum and set straight but not under tension to the kick start lever.

That’s great, Lewis, no hurry here. BTW any idea how to source a nice terminal for the chain end of the rod? Or heat it up and hammer a flat to size?

The Ken Lack rod is 8.5 inches and the original 9 inches. KL has 1 1/4 inch threaded adjustment and the other 1 1/2.

Both are 1/4 inch diameter rod.

Hi Richard. I spent far too long on my kickstarter mechanism before realising the simplicity of it. I had it all too long and the thing kept on jamming when it fully returned. I use a split link to connect the chain to the rod. Forgive me if you already understand this is.

Hi Will just picked up your post, yes I know what you mean. I intend to get the ratchet exactly on the cam at 7 o’clock. I have managed to find a terminal for the chain end of the rod and have a split link at each end of the chain which I will cut to size. I’ll post a photo when it’s done. I am rather new to metalworking so there has been a lot of faffing about and waiting for items to be delivered.
