Many years ago a pal of mine was visiting a man who had collected a few Scotts, and would part with stuff if he liked you. Arriving on a Scott helped. My pal was looking at a rough odd looking Scott built in the 50″s, price £15, which he was about to agree to buy. Just then a chap arrived on an Ariel Arrow, looking to buy a short stroke crank. Scottman could not help, but undetered Ariel Man made an offer to buy the engine from the bike my pal wanted, offered more money to,cheeky devil ! My pal tells him if he can get the crank in his hand into the crankcase the bike is his, if not clear off. Ariel man removes crank case door , short stroke crank won”t go in,too big. Clears off with tail between his legs ! Pal buys Prototype Birmingham Scott (Number 2),which he restores over the next 4 years.
