Gauzes were fitted across the transfer port openings, replacing the usual TP gaskets. Sometimes one would also be fitted between the carburettor body and the crankcase. I suppose that the latter would also stop ‘foreign bodies’ from getting into the engine. I have a few of both sorts in an old tobacco tin somewhere. It’s quite a fine mesh…
