PS If the internal timing is correct I think full advance is always at the best point for the mag.

Hi Steph, I’ve only just caught up with the Scott site and was interested in your problems. I have a ’47 F/S and run the timing on 32deg.BTDC on full advance.
I can’t remember the figures now but knowing the flywheel diameter you can work out what distance 32deg is and having found TDC make a mark on the flywheel with reference to a datum on the crankcase and measure back the distance you have calculated and put a mark on the flywheel, then time to this mark.

The other point is that although you can adjust the timing on the advance/retard lever this is only a temporary measure and the mag will have to be retimed as the internal timing of the mag is set for full advance.
My bike runs very well and the timing seems spot on. Hope this is helpful

Tony, I carried out the procedure you described and the problem is cured, I now have it accurately timed at full advance. This procedure has proved more accurate than trying to measure the piston distance in the restricted area under the radiator plus the mark is there for future reference so thank you.

I have one more job to do and that’s replace the bearing in the final drive outrigger, I may be posting again!

Steve, please note that the outrigger bearing should be a twin-row self-aligning type. More expensive than a standard single row bearing, but it works better and avoids straining the outrigger casting.
