Back to Erik’s original topic, in order to tighten the clamp on the top radiator hose of my 1929 Sports, I have to remove the radiator so:
Start by removing the plugs (easy part).
To remove the radiator bolts must remove the tank.
To remove the tank, remove the seat and rear sub frame as tank is wrapped around the seat downtube.
To remove the rear subframe, remove the battery carrier, rear chainguard, and rear carrier.
To remove the rear carrier, remove the rear number plate….
Reassemble in the reverse order.
I have done this twice now and cannot see a simpler way. Removing the front fork and wheel assembly would be an alternative but just as convoluted.
Ouch Graham, that is really some operation… On my two speeder I have taken the radiator out quite a few times and I never take the top radiator hose of. But I guess that is not an option on your bike.
@Brian: thanks for the valuable input I will sure check the markings on the flyweel. I will check the rollers again but am pretty sure they are the right size, it is 1/2 x 0,205 chain.
But I totally agree, the chains should last a lot longer so there must be something wrong.
The rollers should be 8.51mm/0.335″ diameter to match the original 10044 chain FYI.
Graham – if you need to remove the tank to get the radiator bolts out have you tried putting them in the other way round? With that way, at least on mine, you can leave the bolt in the radiator, just push it back the 1/2″ or so required to get the bolts free of the brackets.
Best regards,
Richard
Early last year I used some Wipperman primary chain and in four races it shed about ten rollers. I went back and looked at the box and noticed the smaller caption “Wipperman Trading”, so I think they had bought it in. I bought some IWIS chain and this has been fine, but then I have for years fitted a brush oiler just above the bottom run with a drip feed to it. Roger
Hi Roger, Please see this link for your information:
https://witra.wippermann.com/?lan=1
The original Wippermann has an 8 point star logo stamped into some roller plates and comes direct from their factory in rolls of 15 foot, not in WITRA boxes!
I guess you had cheap import stuff so no wonder it gave up. IWIS is good stuff but the range is more limited than the “proper” Wippermann range.
Best regards,
Richard
I measured the roller diameter on both Renolds and Regina chain I have used. Both on new chains. The Regina ia 8,51 and the Renold is 8,47. I guess the 0,04 mm difference is not the main culprit is it? Because I experienced the same wear on the Regina chain I used earlier on.
Cheers,
Erik
On my racing comet without lubrication I got through a lot of chain then I discovered Nickasil chain it lasted a lot longer and was well worth its extra cost
it might be worth asking sprockets unlimited if they can get it in 1/2 * 205
