Hi Steve,
When I first bought my Scott about 18 years ago it had that semi liquid grease in the gearbox and all seemed OK Some months later I decided to ride down to to the Annual Scott Gathering at Stanford Hall . I naturally checked my Flyer over and set off on what would be my longest trip on it. After about 75 miles the gearbox seized up at Lowdam Notts. 50 miles from Stanford. It was locked solid and I had to be recovered.
Stripping down the Gearbox showed that the main shaft had seized in the final drive bush, there was no other damage at all. I blamed the grease for cavitating and not lubricating the bush adequately. Since then I have used 140 gear oil ( non hypoid) with no problems. However this does leak a little at the clutch end. Therefore before each trip I check this level with both wheels on the ground.

Hi
I was the other Scott entrant, a 1930 Flying Squirrel tourer. I finished the course but missed out Haggs Mine as a close/medium gearbox and slipping the cork clutch had me in severe difficulties last year! also I avoided High Lonnen for the same reason.
I had to retire at Velvet Path last year when when the drive to the oil pump failed, fortunately I noticed it before any damage was done.
I am in the results as riding an Enfield as I took over another entry. It was as usual a great motorcycling day out. Tom Norman and all the team have ensured that this event goes from strength to strength .
