    Do we need a club?

There is a community of people dedicated to a german motorbike called D-Rad (1920 – 1932). D-Rad was the biggest motorbike manufacturer in germany in the late twentieth and the D-rad R9 was the best selling 500 in 1929. Nothing special, “only” a sturdy but very conservative and reliable bike.

This community is not organized in a club and no structures exist. There is only an open web-forum and two private websites. The better one is run by an 18 year old swiss boy. There are annual gatherings with 60 – 80 D-Rad´s taking part together in a 100km ride. This gatherings are organized by enthusiasts. Who will run the next gathering will be decided at the end of a gathering. Every year it is on different places and every organizer is trying hard to show his hometown/area at its best. All communication and information about parts, help … goes via the forum and the website. All pictures from nearly all gatherings, stories, all technical information, old pictures, everything is downloadable for everyone for free from this website. The D-Rad community has grown over the past years, more and more parts are made and the D-Rad is now a very interesting bike for many.

The last D-Rad club was recognized before the war.

it is probably in the hidden-for-non-members-section ….

It looks like there is a clash of cultures
The established club culture versus the open – free for all – web community

there is no doubt about the outcome, it is only a matter of time

but in the meantime all Scott enthusiast will loose, there will be no winners

    Thank you Eric!

I understand and accept that some people who are not familiar with the internet and how such a thing works are sticking to things like a membership as they see the forum as a clubservice and not as a service from ALL to ALL.

We should continue this discussion under the other thread here:

    viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1873

I do not know, why this thread was opened when I wrote my first reply, maybe I hit the wrong button at the bottom. sorry.

    Kind regards

Thats exactly what I expected. If the committee believes to resolve the financial troubles with closing the forum the financial situation will go worse.

As Jonathan explains ALL forum members are giving information for free and this should be for all. Look at Wkipedia. What would wiki be if there is a membership AND a fee?

Here is the perfect example how it works: https://210277.homepagemodules.de/

This forum started as a privat initiative and is now the biggest forum in german language related to old bikes. Because it grew too big and for legal purposes it is now under the patronage of the German Veteran and Vintage Vehicle Federation. But it is still free and open to all.

Money is generated with advertising, mostly from Google. I believe this forum is meanwhile also a commercial success.

I understand and accept that some people who are not familiar with the internet and does not know how such a thing works are sticking to things like a membership as they see the forum as a clubservice and not as a service from ALL to ALL.

As a service from ALL to ALL the barriers should be as low as possible to attract as much people as possible to contribute. The example with the Douglas racer is typical.

For me it is not the money and I always enyoyed reading some parts of Yowl. But every time I was late to send in GBP at the beginning in an envelope. Later it was better with a credit card. Last time I recognized it only when no Yowl was in my postbox for a long time. I am not a very patient person and with limited time resources for my hobby and I strongly dislike complicated adminstration like filling in a new paper form every year and so on.

Maybe there are more like me?

    Kind regards

I have no access to the mebers area

This means a discussion about excluding non members from this forum is for members only and excludes the people concerned.

My understanding about such a formum is so different from what I experience here, that I will think about terminating my membership here.

    Hello,

I looked at this a while ago and it is much more difficult to compare the worth of an old bike with the prices today.

One should compare the average income and the costs of live and the costs of work and…

For example the cost of one KWH electrical energy was equal to the salary for an hour of a craftsmen in Germany in 1929. Today it is a fracture of this.

    This may help:

After a long rest I suck out the black oil-petrol from the wells in the crankcase. I use this fluid on a cleaning rag to “clean” the transferbox every time I drain the wells. My transferbox looks always perfect black as this fluids burns in and is very resistable.

I identified the coughing as the mixture beeing too weak

    @efr215 wrote:

Having the needle in the top groove also seems a bit odd as that too will make for a rich mixture.

Sorry highest position means needle in bottom groove which makes a rich mixture at intermediate

    @efr215 wrote:

Is the slide badly worn perchance?

No it is in very good shape

My feeling is that the mixture is ok in idle

too weak at intermediate between idle and accelaration (if I lift the throttle and keep the air lever a little bit down it works fine)

a little bit too rich at accelaration

    and ok at full throttle

I read on another topic in this forum that 3-jet Binks carb is working fine on another Veteran Scott. But this is probably another unobtainium piece.
