I’m sorry Roger – did I out-bid you ? I’m beginning to wish that I had chosen a less revealing user name for Ebay. Would you like a copy?
Hello Eric –
I initially experienced similar problems with my 2 speeder kick start. The whole aparatus is a bit flimsy and I found that I was cautious about giving it a really good kicking! I was always told that if you kick it twice and nothing happens than there is a problem – advice which is no doubt well-meaning but often a little detatched from the reality of an old bike.
After some deliberation and practice I found that the following proceedure worked and I think that I might have seen the practice adopted by an obviously knowledgeable (and aged ) 2 speed specialist at the Banbury Run one year.
The travel on the kick start (at least on my bike) goes beyond the 180 degree mark but it is difficult to kick it that far when standing along side the bike facing forward in the conventinal manner – or even for that matter standing astride. Nonetheless that extra 10-15 degrees travel is necessary.
Firstly, try kicking it whilst standing alongside but facing backwards (if you see what I mean). This operation is best done with the aid of a mate holding the bike for you by the handlebars (unless you are content to bend the rear stand). Certainly said subject at the Banbury run was so assisted.
Secondly , try to develop a measured rythmic kick (honestly!). After two or three such kicks the engine builds up a bit of momentum in turning (or at least one of the kicks falls in sync with the turns produced by the last) and hey presto !
Anyhow, that’s how it is with mine. I hope this might help.
Hello Drew – nice bike. I wouldn’t worry about the rear hub if I was you. If your bike is a 1929 tourer (which I think it is) the rear hub should be a Webb hub rather than an Enfield cush hub – yours looks right to me but I’m prepared to be put right if I’m not!!
I will try to copy and post the picture from the 1929 brochure which will show that your bike is pretty much correct, subject to a few touches such as the exhaust.
Send a request to John Underhill, the club registrar and he will probably have details of your bike and the works records are with the VMCC in Burton on Trent which will give you conclusive details of its dispatch. (However, I think 1928-9 records might be missing).
Welcome to the club!
Thank you Martin – I will follow up your lead.
Thank you too Eric – I would be very interested in the article which I have not seen previously.
Regards to both of you.
My last post on this topic, I promise !
I am about to place an order with Swen and therfore need final orders from anyone who wants me to co-ordinate matters for them. The prices will depend on the numbers ordered , I am told, but these were the prices in 2005:
twist grip: euro 80
single lever euro 60
set inverted levers euro 75
clutch lever euro 75
I understand that plating costs are up and, of course, the £ is down against the euro. Nonetheless prices should not vary too far from these.
Anyone who is interested please email me by Sunday and I will send in the Order. Those who have already replied, please confirm your orders as I may have misaid your email (!!).
Thanks
Well that didn’t work did it? Try this……

(!)
Lewis – i’ve edited your email to show the picture – need to uncheck the ‘disable BBC’ option in your message to enable the link to work. Regards, Paul (webmaster@scottownersclub.org)
Thank you Erik for the reminder about posting pictures … here goes for pictures of the levers concerned (I hope it works !)

For those of you who expressed an interest on the last occasion – I have been informed that Swen is taking orders for the 1″ bar Bowden comntrols which I referred to in the above posting.
He will be producing inverted levers, amal type single pull twist grips, left hand and right hand air/mag levers. Usually available in chrome or Nickel plating but not sure on this occasion.
Please send me an email if you are interested and I will make further enquiries regarding cost and will co-ordinate supplies if you wish. On the last occasion I bought some of the controls their prices were good compared to others , but admittedly still not cheap!
Do they accept credit cards….?
Hello Blaine,
Lovely bike. I think that your mudguards are correct – D shape profile, 5 inches wide (?) and the flat stays rivetted rather than bolted. The valancing on the front mudguard looks correct too. Nice Brampton Monarch forks as well.
Regards
I will keep looking for you – bikes (especially Scotts) turn up in the strangest places.
Other things to consider about the one that got away – the engine was apparently a powerplus replica engine from 1931. The forks could be Brampton girder which was correct for 1934/5 but look a little too lightweight. The handle bars were set too high and chromed and on close inspection appear to be 7/8 inch rather than 1 inch and stove enamelled as supplied. Not that I’m being pedantice, mind!
Keep us informed as to how you get on.
Bad luck, John. The bike looked quite a correct example and the new radiator was as the seller correctly pointed out worth a premium of £600. However, the battery and the horn appeared to be on the wrong sides (ie reversed) and the mud guards were C- profile rather than the correct D-profile. Perhaps it was not as original as the seller suggested.
Andy Teirnan has 3 Scotts for sale according to the most recent OBM, if I remember correctly, a 1936 , a 1940 and a 1947. The 1935 has rear suspension and plunger forks according to the picture which is likely to be a later conversion. The 1940 is not pictured but the ’47 appears sound and unaltered. The prices are dealer prices though.
Keep Looking and Good Luck. Remember – only 25 days or so until the next edition of YOWL is out. Flotsam and Jetsam is the place to look!
Try the following item on ebay at present:
Item number: 290194349406
Looks OK and has the benefit of a new radiator.
Jim – I think that I’ve got a spare in the garage amongst a number of U/s radiators I have accumulated. I definitely have a plastic one which might serve as a stop gap (!) until you find a replacement . Send me a private message with your address and I will try to send one tomorrow (when I will have braved the weather to confirm my suspicions).
Hello Jeff, just a note to say thanks – Ken did indeed have some. Thanks for the tip off !
