Thanks, but I’m really trying to find out if I’m correct in connecting the two sets of coils together on the Millar alternator, by connecting the green and yellow wires together, and if my understanding that this will increase the normal current output, but not the voltage, as I’m confused why this helps with a 12V conversion.

Thanks for the links, I had read the first one but it didn’t really answer my question, and I haven’t access to the second one.

Re-wiring the new battery in at the moment (and checking the other wiring while I do), I’ve decided to go for the two 6V batteries in the mock Lucas cover so I can also hook it up to a 12V battery optimiser. Once done, I’ll check through everything else and give it another go, I’ll post up results one way or another on the other thread 🙄

Thanks for that I like the idea of a sealed battery, has anyone any experience of using one of these…

Does this fit a Brum Scott?

Nice to see a photo (9m 40s in) of my late father Keith Rhodes aboard his 1914 Scott FH 2949 😀

It was only 4.9V after charging, so I’ll source a replacement, is there a recommended modern equivalent?

Before you do anything else, drain off the old petrol, including the float chamber, and refill with fresh petrol, preferably ethanol-free, like BP ‘Ultimate’. Modern so-called petrol has a ‘shelf-life’ of about six weeks !!

Okay, replaced the petrol with new Shell V-Power, went to start it and, no spark 😥 , which leads me on to more questions…

    1) Am I correct in saying that the Birmingham Scott needs a healthy battery to create a spark?
    2) Would an “old” battery contribute towards our starting problems?
    3) Should we try a new battery?

    Cheers Russell

The distributor housing is, as you say, positively located, however, if you loosen the distributor clamp and remove a small screw that prevents the distributor being removed, the distributor itself can be withdrawn from the distributor housing and the helical gear re-engaged in a different position thereby altering the timing.

Hi Dave, we haven’t dismantled the distributer-pump unit, so that should be as it was before when it ran fine, so should be “correct” – Cheers Russell

Just another thought… Stale old petrol from before the rebuild ?
    Brian

That’s very possible as I can’t remember the last time it was filled, is there anyway of checking we are getting fuel through other than seeing if the plugs are “wet” and smell of petrol?

    Hi Russell,
I meant what area do you live – if your not to far (Orkney – Cornwall – Gobi Desert etc). I’d come over and either get you up and running or at least identify the problem.

Hi we’re in West Yorkshire, Norristhorpe, in between Dewsbury and Huddersfield

Have you tried using a new set of plugs? Plugs that spark well in the open air sometimes fail under compression so it is worth fitting a new pair.
    Adrian

Yes tried a new set of plugs, and checked they are sparking under compression with a timing light.

Okay rechecked everything and the timing did look massively out, so much so that it couldn’t be adjusted by turning the distributer, so we ended up taking the pump-distributer unit off to check, but that all looked okay so we replaced it back on the bike. Magically the timing looked closer then, so we’re not really sure if we mis-read the timing initially or somehow the pump-distributer unit wasn’t located properly (is that even possible with the locating pin 😯 ).

Anyway we’ve now reset the timing by checking that the cylinder is at TDC then adjusting the distributer so the points are just fully open, is there a better way of doing this?

But it still won’t start 🙁 , we’re now very frustrated and ready to give up , I get the feeling it’s something fundamental and the timing being out gave us hope just to be dashed 😥

Kevin – sorry couldn’t phone you, as I don’t have your number, and as I’m not currently a paid up member of the SOC don’t have access to a current Yowl.

Yes we did replace them, but from memory they were cork.
