How interesting Carl,
From my scant records, this might be an engine number not known to the SOC, and may well be earlier than 1928. Ian Parsons has the definitive records; I will draw his attention to your posting.
Best regards,
David.
Hello,
Have you studied the nearside & offside photos I took at Abbotsholme August 2012 of all the machines on display – see topic “SOC ANNUAL GATHERING MACHINES 2012 on YOUTUBE” on the SOC General Forum of 26 Aug 2012.
Or the previous year “SOC ANNUAL GATHERING 2011 – SLIDE SHOW OF SCOTTS ON YOUTUBE” on the SOC General forum of 10 Sept 2011.
Hope this helps,
David.
How sad, such an engaging character.
I do, however, hope that his prophecy will not come true, but that his bikes will be used and not, as he feared, become museum pieces to be only polished in the family shed, under a notice “Grandad’s old bikes”
Good evening Mark,
KB is a Liverpool registration. Had the number been KB 596, I might well have guessed 1929. For actual date, see Ian Parsons’ reply below. I cannot find HKB 596 in my old (out of date) lists, which may mean that this is a machine not previously known to the SOC. Machine Registrar Ian Parsons can give you the up to date information, especially if you can supply frame and engine numbers.
The above comments do not detract from the fact that it does look a tidy machine, consistent with c1929 but I have no idea of market prices across the pond.
Has someone put the front wheel in “back to front” ?
The brake levers emerging from the alloy brake back plates should point backwards.
Or has there been an oil leak from the Dowty forks which has found it’s way into the drums. My 1947 Flyer is currently off the road, with rags tied around the lowest (chromed) parts of the forks to guard against the possibility of this happening.
The front brakes on this machine are quite reasonable for a heavy machine, albeit a long way from modern discs.
Yes, you are right Keith.
Questions posed by a North West member resulted in an evasive reply with an unwillingness to declare frame & engine numbers —- “sorry cant send numbers but you could call and look in person”
I note that the Ebay listing still says “No questions or answers have been posted about this item.”
In a John Underhill listing in 1996, HA 5270 was recorded as:-
“1950 Flying Squirrel, frame 5212M, engine DPY5398, gearbox 4498CM. 1928 reg. Frame was 5300M”.
Maybe Ian has more info.
Looks quite a tidy late Shipley machine.
Excellent sounds ! Wish you could add the smells as well !
No Erik, not lost, but seldom seen these days.
In the 1980’s, two unrestored Mercury Scotts were on a trailer at a Stanford Hall Annual Gathering. I believe that one was PNJ 953, which subsequently appeared nicely restored at the 1990 Gathering and was last seen by me on the road, as a participant in the SOC Northern Section Derbyshire Run on 2nd June 1996.
Thank you Carl for injecting a welcome note of optimism into this discussion.
Some 15 or so years ago, when our Government decided to exempt pre 1973 vehicles from road tax (vehicle excise duty), countless people put on their pessimistic heads, thinking that it was the beginning of controlling and curtailing the use of such exempt vehicles. The sooner the current negative views fade, the better, and we await the response of insurers.
Regarding Carl’s comment “Many fatal motorcycle accidents are caused by car drivers who say that they did not see the motorcycle”, I always wear a high visibility bib, or reflective flash, which I would recommend to all bikers, even those with modern machines that have good lights – the bike may be well illuminated at night, but if you come off, following motorists may not see you in the road, only the bike.
Safe riding !
Hello Ron,
I wrote an article for Yowl October 2009, which included a picture of a selection of Scott club badges on page 205, and was to answer a question from another NW member whose Scott was fitted with a club badge from new. Let me know if that helps you identify your badge.
I have just posted my comments under the actual announcement on the Members’ Area of the Forum, but find that they automatically appeared in the announcement on the General Page. I have therefore deleted them, and will re-enter them as a new topic on the Members’ Area
If looking at other sites in India, note that the Royal Enfield Owners Club report problems of unfulfilled orders, paid up front, from Soni Motors, Dehli, who have links with “Lambrettawallah”, in their current club magazine.
I was speaking to Eddie on Monday on Section matters, and he warned me of a slight delay with this issue.
Incidentally, I am not sure why we are corresponding on the “General” page – or is it to draw the attention of non-members to one of the benefits of SOC membership, which still costs less per year than an evening in the pub ?
Thanks for that Dave.
I had a hunch that it would be TK 5209, which I bought from Glynn Chambers in June 1995 and sold in April 2006.
I note that it was last used in 2007.
