Forgive me Brian, but you appear not to have read all of your Yowl and in particular the minutes of the Committee meeting held on 14 January. There will be an Annual Gathering and there might well be a riders’ event of more than one day, either combined with the Annual Gathering or held separately. At the risk of repeating myself, the Gathering and Abbotsholme/Shuttleworth weekends are not necessarily one and the same.

The Committee are schedules to meet prior to the AGM and it is intended that a decision will be made then. In view of your interest, I assume that we can rely on you to assist with the organisation ?

Hello Ted

The constitution of the Club as set out in the Articles of Association permit a relative of a member of the Club to be admitted as a family member of the Club. There are two provisos (see Article 2) :

1. the family member must sign the membership application of the member concerned (as well as the member applying to join); and ,

2. the Management Committee must approve the appointment of the family member.

Subject to that no further membership fee is payable but if the member’s membership ceases for whatever reason under the Articles the family membership also ceases.

So, there is no automatic membership of all of a member’s relatives and that is because the identification of who are members and who are not would be nigh impossible if there was.

Thanks to Dave I now have a copy of the article from the MotorCycle with the pictures. The bike disclosed is obviously in a later incarnation than that shown in my photograph (which I will try to post). By 1945 when the article was written, Mr Kirk (reportedly all 19 stone of him!) had added Matchless tele forks and wheels. The photograph I have shows the bike as relatively standard apart from what appear to be Brampton Monarch forks and the large SU carburetor (and the Cozette No4 blower of course).

The Vintage and Veteran site has a series of photographs of a very well restored 1930 TT replica including some of the rear number plate in pre-1930 form. This has a raised edge but I have seen others without the edge – take your pick !

Dear All

I am sorry to have to make a contribution which might dampen people’s enthusiasm but I am afraid that this stream is running under a couple of fundamental misunderstandings of what was discussed at the Committee meeting on Saturday.

Firstly, it was not decided at the meeting that the Abbotsholme weekend would host this year’s Annual Gathering. The confusion is no doubt caused because in recent years the Annual Gathering has been held in conjunction with a weekend rider’s event, at either Abbotsholme or Shuttleworth. Notwithstanding this the Annual Gathering has always been a separate event and may be held as such. To emphasise the distinction, the first Abbotsholme weekend in 2007 was held in March and the Annual Gathering at Stanford Hall later in the same year.

Traditionally the Annual Gathering was held on the first Sunday in September and there was a great deal of criticism from the membership when the event was moved, both in respect of the new venue and the new date. The weekend fixed for the Abbotsholme event this year (11th to 13th of August) is earlier than usual and clashes with the height of the summer holidays period. Consequently various members of the Committee (me included) are unable to attend. I anticipate that a lot of members will also have other commitments at the time.

When Kevin reported on Saturday that there had been little uptake for the Abbotsholme weekend the Committee decided that a final date for entries should be set, being the end of this month. Whether or not the event proceeded would depend on the numbers committed to attend by 31 January 2017. I understand that the event will require at least 40 entrants in order to be viable and the Club cannot sanction the event being held unless there is such commitment. However, the Committee decided that the Annual Gathering will be held at a later date and at another venue to be decided having regard to the convenience of the membership. This means most likely that the Annual Gathering will be held at a location in the Midlands and sometime during September.

The second inaccuracy concerns Shuttleworth. The Committee has not decided that Shuttleworth will definitely not go ahead. The Shuttleworth event last year was organised by Richard Martin who is the Club’s only point of contact with Old Warden and who was not in attendance at the meeting on Saturday as he is not a member of the Committee. Without Richard’s input the Committee could not make a decision either way – fundamentally it was not certain that Richard was prepared to arrange another event at Shuttleworth. Accordingly the Committee decided to approach Richard before making any decision as to whether an event proceeds there, as well as the date and the form of any such event.

The Committee have agreed to meet again at the Club AGM in April , details of which will be published in Yowl and posted in the members’ area of this forum imminently. A final decision as to the Club’s events for 2017 will be made at that time. The minutes of the Committee meeting will also be published in the next edition of Yowl.

I feel that one final comment is appropriate. Issues of this sort should not be dealt with in the open forum. The subscription-paying members are the only people with legitimate interest in what events the Club holds and similarly they are the only people who have a right to a report of the workings of the Committee. If anyone would like to continue with this then I would be happy to answer any messages posted to the forum dealing with Club Matters and Announcements. Incidentally the professional advice received from the web-designer engaged to build the new Club website is that all forum traffic will be required to be carried out inside the members area. Perhaps that requirement at least will avoid further similar hitches.

Thanks both, I have got as far as the vol no 11 issue 11 article which is a reprint of the article in the MotorCycle which is quite lengthy. There is no photograph but instead a line drawing of the bike in question.

According to Technicalities the closest colour for matching is that of an old 1d stamp. I have heard that Magenta as used on Triumphs in the early 1970 s is a close match (British Leyland colour code 92).

I am the (proud) owner of a 1966 Triumph Tiger Cub. In mitigation, I acquired this as part if a deal including a Scott. Some years ago I took the Cub for an MOT and although it passed I received an advisory that the walls of front tyre were cracked and would need replacement.

The following year having not replaced the tyre (and having avoided the temptation to apply shoe polish to fill the cracks as advocated by friends) I presented the bike for MOT again and was surprised to receive a pass without further comment.

Yet another year passed and I was now acutely conscious of the cracked front tyre. I therefore decided to book the Cub in with the garage undertaking the test for a service and change of the offending front tyre. A few days prior to the test I was a little troubled when I received a telephone call from the garage explaining that they were having difficulty sourcing a new tyre. I suggested a few suppliers and thought nothing more.

On the day of the test I rode to the garage assuming that a new tyre would be waiting and there would be no further problem. However, I was told that there was still no tyre available and consequently I settled back to await the inevitable failure of the MOT. Imagine my surprise when I was handed a clear pass certificate by the tester with the words, ” There’s a bit more life in that front tyre yet !”

We are certainly looking into an online shop for sales of spares and other things – I will report back when I have some ideas about the viability of this.

In the meantime I cannot think of a better example of a veteran model than your combination. Please send me copies of the photographs that you have and I will see if they are suitable for the job. Otherwise I may need to ask you to take some more!

Whilst it is good to hear from you all, I acknowledge that only a small proportion of the membership is tuning in. Nevertheless, those concerned with the website will have ample access to this thread.

Kevin, perhaps an edited version of this thread could be printed in Yowl ?

So far as the suggestions are concerned:

1. I like Kevin’s idea if a sample Yowl in the open area – after all we often give a way old copies to prospective members. I will see that the designers can accommodate this. It might be possible to do this through the news/events page which can be automatically set to rotate articles and hence perhaps Yowls.

2. I will see what is possible for the links to suppliers. Whilst I like the idea of a separate profile of each supplier, this will only be possible if the individuals concerned were prepared to provide the content and then there would be a risk of that content becoming out of date. Whilst I am intent on having as many people with access to amend or update the site as possible, allowing all suppliers access would not be feasible.

3. I generally agree with Dave (and Chris) concerning the models to be highlighted. On reflection it is possibly difficult to limit the numbers to 5 . My suggestion would be as follows:

a. A veteran machine;
b. A mid 1920s two Speed Super Squirrel;
c. A 1929/1930 TT replica;
d. A 1930s model – perhaps a Clubman Special
e. A post-war Shipley model;
f. A Birmingham Scott;
g. A Silk 700S.

Comments readily accepted.

The designer is keen to get on with the artwork (ie the photography) so I would like some consensus on this as soon as possible. I suggest that the highlighted models are used as the machines for stock photographs for the site. As previously mentioned its intended that there will be some form of photo shoot and although Shuttleworth would undoubtedly provide an excellent back-drop, the designer would prefer not to wait until the end of the Summer.

1. Copies of the Yowl Indices;
2. Volunteers to write the text.

The Club’s constitution requires a quorum of 20 for the meeting to be effective. Whilst I am confident that we will achieve this, as stated in my earlier posting, those who are unable to attend personally are able to be represented by proxy in favour of another member or the Chairman. My 1947 was converted to petroil by Ian Pearce. He recommended 4.5 fl oz (or 140cc) oil per gallon using Fuchs Comp 2 semi synthetic.
