    1. Hi Lewis

My method of pulling the central fork spring down is to put a rod where the wheel spindle goes and to connect  a wire fence tensioner between the rod and the spring, using a loop of inner Bowden cable to connect the the tensioner to the spring. You can then wind up the tensioner and pull down the spring and fit the button.

I’ve been using  Castrol GP 50 for years without problems other than those caused by me!

One of my abiding memories was the sign on the wall behind the counter. –  NO TIME TO TALK.  I also remember the rather random hours that he kept. Despite having phoned and if my Scott, my sole means of transport, wasn’t running, I would spend about two hours on various buses and trains to get to Sutton Common Station only to find the shop closed and no sign of him in his workshop. Had to go home empty handed.

When he finally shut up shop and it was taken over by a second hand car dealer, the back garden was littered with Scott frames for the taking. I think that he ended up living with his brother in Brixton or Streatham in South London. I remember being contacted by someone from Motorcycle or Motorcycling who were trying to trace him. Somehow, and I can’t remember how, I got a message to him and a few days later he phoned me and I passed on the Motorcycle or Motorcycling contact details. I never heard from him again.

Never say no as someone will prove otherwise! I would suggest that maybe at some point  the bike was dropped requiring a replacement headlamp and after the war plenty of ex WD Lucas spare parts, amongst other things, were available very cheaply from the likes of Marble Arch Motor Supplies etc. You could get a complete 7” headlamp for a pound or two. Wiring diagrams are available in the Scott Technicalities .

The two clamps on r/h side are correct and a single strap on the left is also correct until they changed from mag ignition to coil ignition some time in 1948 when a Dynamo was fitted  to the left-hand door and then it required three clamps to hold it in position.

I have a pair of 1946 Brompton forks fitted with the Scott full width hub that I acquired  at a Scott rally some years ago to be fitted to a mid forties frame.

I have a 1946 catalogue showing the girder fork variant with the full width hub fitted.

Thanks Lewis, I think it could be. The age is right as is the first name.

Always turn the droppers off when the bike is not in use. The wells in the bottom of the crankcase tend to fill with oil that has drained down when the bike has not been in use and so when started the big ends dip into these oil reservoirs, displacing the oil which produces the smoke at start up. It also beneficially lubricates the big ends straight away.

Lewis, have you thought of contacting Morton’s Media Group who publish The Classic  MotorCycle magazine?  They have extensive archives from the Motor Cycle and Motor Cycling magazines and may be able to retrieve the information that you need.

I thought that I might have been able to help out but the MotorCycle report that I had was for the 1929 Scott trial!

The “quick thread” is the clutch worm mounted on the gearbox and applies thrust to the three thrust pins that cause the clutch to engage/dis-engage.

I may be able to help out with a flywheel if you still need one. I will need to check out it’s condition if you still need one. You can contact me via my contact details in Yowl.

The engine number will only tell you what the crankcase was originally but will date the crankcase.  Many changes to the interior components could have occurred over the years.

1/4″ wide big end bearings indicate that it was probably a mid twenties two speeder engine. Later engines had 3/8″ wide big end bearings.

    Hi All

The general consensus from our regular attendees is that we should go ahead with the meeting. So unless there is a change in the restrictions, there will be a meeting next Wednesday, 7.30, 8.00pm at the Fox and Hounds, Tilburstow Hill, Godstone, Surrey.

    See you there

    Dave
