I have posted your enquiry on to John Underhill, I hope he will reply to you direct.
My friend Jack Smith, 86 and still riding, has the view that any vintage bike that is “set” properly should not need mechanical or electrical assistance to start it! Mind you, he doesn’t like Scotts, so he is not right about everything!

If you look back at October 2005 Yowl, botom of page 208, you will see that Club member John Underhill from Bristol has fitted an electric starter to a two speeder. John has the same name as our club registrar, it causes confusion.
Do you want me to ask him, on your behalf, how he did it ?

Colin Morris has organised a friend to make a batch of two speeder oil tanks. Give him a call 01923 671441. He lives near St Albans, Hertfordshire.

I know that you were the architect of the Club’s revised constitution, and I bow to your greater knowledge of these matters.
However, to the layman, it would appear that the Club is discriminating against those living abroad, and by the same token, to those unable to attend the AGM for reasons of age, infirmity, disability or poverty.
Not very “2005” is it ?
Was this cotingency considered when the constitution was revised ?
Kind regards

Never mind dopy dowties, where’s the Cherry and Walnut cake wot I won !

My 2002 Gas Gas Pampera trail bike is factory fitted with an electronic bicycle type speedo, just went through it’s MOT. It failed the first time for being too noisy and having a buckle in the front wheel, but the speedo wasn’t mentioned, so I guess it’s OK.

On the subject of chains, Ken Lack tells me that roller diameter is an important issue that is often overlooked when buying new chains.
Have a look in “Sources of Supply” in the back of Yowl. Dave Brierley has taken the initative to secure a supply of the correct Reynolds chains on behalf of the Club, and members should support him (and other suppliers) as much as possible.

Hello
Thanks for your help on this topic. With the greatest respect, the suggestions are “tweeks”, as opposed to getting to the root cause of the difficulty. My other bike starts easily, even after months of neglect. Old fuel, old magneto, a couple of kicks and it goes. Living in an urban area, I like using synthetic oil, as not many of my neighbours are enthusiasts.
For the beginner, “The Book of The Scott” is worth a look on this topic. Last night, armed with said book, enthusiasm generated from the forum, and a gallon of Homebase paraffin I set about conducting the crankcase test. I got paraffin everywhere, in my left shoe, all over the patio. I got a look of incredulity from Lynda that only a wife of 30 years standing can muster. However, it is a worthwhile exercise. In my case, a steady drip from the bottom on the flywheel, slight weep from the doors, and a gush from the joint between the exhaust pipe and the barrel confirms my suspicions. I need expert help.
For those of us so blessed, has anyone considered the effect that faulty Half Compression Valves would have on starting ?
Anyway, no more views from me as I am now on jankers, with a bucket of hot soapy water and a scrubbing brush !

You are not overwhelmed with views on poor starting. I have been eagerly been awaiting expert pronouncements on this matter.
I have two 2speed Scotts about the same age as yours. One starts easily, whatever the circumstances. The other doesn’t. Like you, I’ve been struggling for years with it. In desperation, I’ve even fitted a Mikuni carb. To my embarrassment, it features on the Club calendar, September 2005, complete with bath plug and chain !
I am not an expert, this is a completely uninformed theory.
Do you think that a lack of primary compression might be our problem ? It would fit in with the poor starting, but good running scenario….once it’s going, it’s OK. When mine will not start, I take the plugs out, splash a drop of petrol down the plug holes, kick it over a few times, plugs back, it goes first kick. It works every time. It makes me wonder if the correct charge is getting into the combustion chamber.
How you quantify or measure crankcase compression is beyond me. There seem to be plenty of places a leak could occur. How do you fix it ? Roger Moss has kindly offered to look at my engine when he gets time. I’ll let you know how we get on.

Hello Steve
I guess I am the best person to reply to your enquiry, as I am the Membership Secretary.
I am assuming that you are Stephen D. If so, you dated your cheque 29/05/2005, and I received it on 01/06/2005. I welcome you to the Scott Owners Club, and admire your enthusiasm to join up without any delay.
However, you do have to take into account that the Club is not a commercial organisation, and relies on volunteers to undertake administrative duties in their precious spare time. For my own part, I am a director of a medium sized company, and have a family, house and garden to consider, and a social life. Club officials like to ride their bikes too ! This (long) weekend I have been in Mid Wales escorting an 86 year old ISDT enthusiast, retracing the routes of the trials of yesteryear. Incidentally, he is still riding, his home brewed BSA B15/Greeves special, to great effect. With 70 years experience, he didn’t fall off. I did !
In these circumstances I trust you will excuse a few days delay, and I hope to post you membership details this week.
Kind regards

“The Third Scott Selection” is available from The Vintage Motor Cycle Club Ltd, Allen House, Wetmore Road, Burton on Trent, DE14 1TR, UK.
The cost is £13.49 in the UK, £14.99 in Europe, or £18.99 rest of the world.
It will be on sale at VMCC events for £9.99 but I guess the cost of postage to you via air mail would be nearly £5.

***************Don’t forget that you must not miss Roger’s talk to the North London Section on Wednesday evening*************

May I refer you to Mrs T who claims sole rights in the European Union to finding me extra work. Indeed, at the time of writing, she is at evening classes learning Morse Code, to enable her to tap out final instructions on my headstone. You have taken on a formidable opponent, who used to work for THE Mrs T. Not many people know that. Watch out for the handbag, Roger, even in your distant eyrie you are not immune !
Colin Hough has thankfully come to my rescue. Even if I had the time to trawl the ebay, Exchange and Mart, OBM, Playboy etc etc, and the inclination to cold call the “potentials”, I do not agree that they would necessarily make good long term members. To offer them free membership would hardly be fair on the fifty or so legitimate new members who seek us out and have the initative and the interest
to join us every year.
We do not need to scrape the barrel for new members. The right crowd, and no crowding !
Kind regards

Hello again
We sent about 70 letters to local members, Colin Morris confirms that the response has been overwhelming, so I can tell you that the meeting next Wednesday evening at 8 oclock is definitely ON.
Please be assured that all attending will receive a warm welcome, and that nobody will be neglected.
Martin Hodkin sends his best wishes for a sucessful start to this new Section.
I am sorry if this news is a disappointment to those members who have obtained an evening pass and were hoping for a diversion to The Spearmint Rhino Club………..another time !
Kind regards
