For a two stroke engine to work properly it has to be an efficient pump, and to achieve this the internal parts have to be sealed from the atmosphere this is achieved by coating them in oil, if your engine was assembled more than 3 or 4 months ago the chances are that the oil used in assembly has evaporated, we are talking mainly about piston sealing and glands, both can be rectified by liberal use of an oil can and won`t require removing the engine probably just oil pipes from crankcase unions, transfer covers and mabe the carburettor, when everything is OK you should hear a distinctive plop plop plop as you kick it over, good luck. Hi James, nearly all the fasteners on my new 1964 Birmingham Scott were zinc plated, the trouble with this is that after a year or two the plating on the high spots of all the nuts/bolts etc. gets polished away and rust takes its place, I would always go for stainless items they are easily available fit and forget components, by the way looking at the photo of your machine the speedo cable appears to have been fitted incorrectly on my machine the shielded end of the cable came out of the headlight shell. Hi James, from memory the main engine mounting studs were fitted with two 5/8″ X 20tpi BSCY half nuts locked together on each end, I believe these are available in stainless on E-BAY UK, good luck Alan Noakes.
Jonathon, the trouble is that the top edge of the old rings will have developed a radiused corner and this will match a radiused wear ridge in the bore, replacing the top ring with something with a sharp 90 degree edge will cause the piston to tighten up at the top of the stroke and could cause damage to the top groove of the piston or excessive wear to the gudgeon pin bosses, the choices are, put your old rings back in, grind a bevel on your new top ring, or turn your top ring groove to a lower position fit your new ring and then find a thin undersize spacer ring to fit the gap above the ring. Keith, Scott gearboxes are very agricultural and yours will probably be perfectly OK for ever and a day but my point is that your sleeve gear seems to be .070″ away from its correct position and the sliding dogs will only stop in their indexed position and won`t go further into full engagement which would be the case if the .070″ was added to the bush shoulder. Alan.
Keith I would refrain from doing anything that would restrict full engagement of the dogs, I personally would not worry about the mismatch of the gears, however as you have a built up layshaft you can either grind the spindle or the gear to improve alignment. I have recently refurbished a vintage gearbox that required all new bushes, and as the sleeve gear was badly worn and pitted I took the opportunaty to grind the diameter and backface of the gear this required an undersize bush with a thicker shoulder to take up all the end float, the only problem with this is the need to mill part of the new bush away when fitted in order to clear the layshaft gear when you have a vintage solid layshaft. Hi Brian I can`t add much only to verify that the cranks were special for that model and probably the best longstroke cranks ever made by the Scott motor cycle co,as far as I know this model only lasted one year. The cranks looked like shortstroke cranks from the back but had no oil drillings whatsoever, I have a couple in stock and could e-mail photos if you are interested, I just assume that 1933/34 was a time when Scotts older clientel were sceptical about the new detachable head engines coming on the market , and this was offered to placate them. In my mind this model would have had the input of Harry Langman who new what made a good Scott and not William Cull who was obviously a dreamer and deeply engulfed in positive big end lubrication IE the grand prix engine , the three cylinder engine, and the swashplate pump all far too complicated for a two stroke engine not forgetting of course the DPZ/DPY cranks what a backward step this was. I would also assume that the LFZ/LFY cylinders were just TT rep castings without the cylinder wall oiling machining carried out and would have had milder port timings. The reason I know about LFZ/LFY cranks is that when I bought my new Birmingham Scott in 1964 it was not only fitted with clubman special pistons it also had LFY cranks, I don`t know for sure but these could also have been used in the Swift ,unless someone knows differently ? My new 1964 Birmingham model was also fitted with 3 ring pistons, Matt obviously had quite a stock of these. Please do not leave out the bottom ring as the crankcase compression could bleed out into the exhaust port just leave an old ring in situ. Alan Noakes

Hi Brian, About five years ago during my quest to obtain another Hogan RCA 350 twin cylinder two stroke engine I met a man called Dave Benson from south London who had one for sale, Dave Benson had a serious collection of motorcycles at his home, a large proportion of which were Villiers engined pre-war machines, one of these was a Francis Barnet with a 1T twin cylinder engine, from memory this was an inline engine, Dave pointed out that he had terrible trouble getting any lights working untill he found out that it had a four volt system, where he obtained four volt bulbs from I didn`t dare ask. I also doubt very much if this machine had any Lucas equipment fitted at all but I may be wrong. Alan Noakes.
