Yes you need to undo the two nuts that hold the gearbox to the under tray (2 large studs straight through the bottom of the tray). They will need to be slackened off anyway to adjust the tension on the primary chain. You only need to drop the tray slightly at the back, then you can move the box sufficiently to manoeuvre the clutch basket out with the centre undisturbed. I’m sure they are all a bit different in the amount of clearance.

On mine, I always have to slightly slacken the front nuts on the under tray and undo the rear ones. Then drop the rear about 1/2 inch for clearance. Its a pain. But wait until someone else answers who may have a better method.

I’m sure someone can be more accurate but I think a pre-war bike should have 7 or 8 inch headlight?

yes, that is correct. Many thanks, Dave. It was only when I looked through a loop that I saw the crack right across one ‘V’.

Thanks Brian. the cases are apart. What I’ve got are both shafts/clusters stuck in the outer, R/H case by their bearings. I had thought about drilling holes and drifting the races but hadn’t got as far as tapping and plugging them afterwards, good idea.

I notice that the chain selling chap at Shepton mallet this year had tins of Linklife’s modern replacement. Not cheap but then Linklife wasn’t either.

I used to look at the old forum all the time and found it very useful. I have to say, that this site is a great disappointment. It’s catch 22, I don’t bother looking very often and therefore don’t contribute because there isn’t very often anything on it. I’m not Facebook orientated so it’s quite a loss to me. Shame.

I have had a quick check for play as you suggested Barrie. There appears to be no play at all. I wonder if this is the cause of the problem. When I stripped the gearbox, I turned up a new bronze bush for the mainshaft. I must have given it too thick a shoulder maybe.

Thank you for the answers, chaps. The Scott has lost its place on the operating table to a nipped up Guzzi, its like the NHS in my garage! Graham, the ‘rotor’ on my gear change is. nice snug fit so I’m pretty sure the problem must be internal some how. I will try Barrie’s check when I get the Guzzi back in one piece. All very frustrating.
