If the engine momentarily locked up, it is possible that a minor piston seizure occurred. The piston rings could have become stuck in their grooves due to the ring land having deformed. This would still appear to give good compression but in practice it is the crankcase suction that is important and it is possibly poor suction that is causing a failure to start. It should be possible to correct the ring grooves with a thin fine file.

Eric you are a little optimistic. From the Engine Nos I would estimate about 15500 Scotts made. There are details of 2500 machines on the Register but many of these have not been heard of for some years. Scotts that are not on the register do turn up but I never hear of Scotts being broken up though I suspect this does occasionally happen.

    A rough breakdown is

    2 Speeders 530
    3 Speed Super 100
    Duplex Framed Flyers 1600
    Birmingham 200
    SDTube & Sprint 110

I have been using my Myford Super7 which has a q/change gearbox for 30 years and it was 17 years old when I bought it! Myford have a deservedly high reputation and spares are available at reasonable prices

I have found it ideally suited to almost all the work I have needed to do in rebuilding 3 Scotts and 2 cars. It is large enough to machine a 2 Speed backplate casting. In practice the majority of work I do is making bolts, spacers and bushes. It may not be that powerful but an amateur has plenty of time. Being belt driven it it quite forgiving of errors that might be catastrophic on more powerful gear driven lathes. I would strongly recommend a rear tool post for parting off.

VR 9135 does not appear on the Register although the Reg No is on the DVLA database. However it is shown as unlicensed with a date of liability of 1/1/97.

Sparking Plugs with an inbuilt resistor are bad news for a magneto. As a result of the resistor the magneto has to generate a higher voltage to overcome the resistance of the resistor plus the resistance of the air gap. This increased voltage puts a greater strain on the armature windings and their insulation. This will eventually cause them to burn out and fail.

I would also advise against using resistor plug caps for the same reason.

Judging by the engine and frame numbers this Scott would probably be late 1919 or early 1920. The engine could well be the original one fitted from new.

I have a 1919 sales leaflet I could scan and email if you wish.

    Hi Gary,

On my 498cc 2 Speed Sports squirrel I have an Amal fitted. I use a
    170 Main Jet
    6/3 Slide
    106 Needle Jet.

I set my ignition to the points just opening on full advance at 5/16″ BTDC

This bike still exists but its Reg No is now JSL 683. Not sure who the current owner is. Registered 3/9/36. The forks are either Earles or Reynolds circa 1960.

I have ben using Silkolene Comp 2 in my 2 Speed Sports Squirrel for the last 3 years. It supplies the engine and the 2 Speed Gear. I have not found any problems with it in the gear, it makes the gear smoother and less prone to snatch. I give it about 1/2 a pumpfull every 25 miles. Synthetic oils do seem to lubricate better than mineral oils as well as burn cleaner.

UG nnn registrations were issued by Leeds From May 1960 till Feb 1961. Perhaps the bikes were despatched to Geoff Milnes premises there.

I believe the reason for the power increase is due to the different port sizes and port timing. There may be an increase in compression ratio as well with the detachable head.

There are diagrams of port sizes in Technicalities.

I think an LFZ engine would originally have produced 22 bhp at 4750rpm according to the 1933 brochure.

With a detachable head and block fitted the engine could be either 498cc or 596cc. According to the 1934 sales brochure:

    488cc 27 – 28 bhp at 5400rpm
    596cc 31 – 32 bhp at 5200rpm

I do not know of an easy way to determine the capacity without removing the block.

I too think these are the dust covers for wheel hubs. they would hold a felt seal.

I find it helpful to make a sketch of parts taken to the platers. It helps them as well as you. You can then be sure that nothing is missing or that there are no extra parts

I shall be riding my Dec 1929 2 Speed Sports Squirrel. I am No 388. There are quite a few Scotts entered, I think I counted 34 in the programme. It looks as if the weather will be reasonable too.
