I tried to read something about Online Safety Act 2023 and to be honest, I don’t understand how this could influance vintage motorcycle forum. But I know nothing about such a stuffs. That would be really shame if forum would have to be closed, I don’t have facebook and even if I would try to get there, it wouldn’t work on my old computer (not even on my 20 years old nokia phone). So fot me would be last chance Yowl (or trying to contact member on email). So hope this will not happen.

    Dear Potty,

I did a short ride today, first few meters the bike was pulling too much on ride side, so I had to make a correction and it was ok. Of course, it’s all so different, but I’m slowly getting use to it. Lean out of the sidecar is fixed, so I did a lean out of the bike approximately 1″, right courves are ok, left once bit harder, but I think it just need time. Also was bit different as I rather had a empty sidecar, I was too scared to take a pasanger for first kilometers.

I’m not sure how are the gears of the box, I just found some old photos in my computer af some stamping of the box, on the cover is stamped 3776CM, on the bottom K628, I don’t know if there is some code how to read how are the gears (in case they weren’t changed). I also found some photos of the internals, in case it’s visible difference of the wheels.

Bike is 600 ccm, originaly it was short stroke, but as I couln’t find short stroke barrels and got long stroke once with bike, it’s remade to long stroke engine with 4 ports. My girlfriend as bit less than 50 kg and the wedding is in a bit hilly area, 17 is really too slow, my friend went behind me with BMW R12 and said to me we went about 40 km/h (I don’t have speedo). So 19 could be ok? I will see what other sprocket Pavel Simek has, so most probably I’ll try what’s available or try to buy the plate and reweld the teeth.

Many thanks for all advices, all the best,

    Martin

    Dear Glyn,

yes, I know you are very experienced Scott sidecar rider, so I’m very happy for your advices. Just one think I’m not sure, lean out both, sidecar wheel and bike as well?

And one more question, what gearbox sprocket do you use? I have 17 teeth prepared for the sidecar use, but I’m not if it’s too slow, as the standard solo rides I use 21 teeth, so to jump 4 teets down sounds a bit too much, but the speed feeling will probably change a lot when the sidecar will be attached…?

Many thanks and I will let you know result. Martin

Hi Frank, Pavel Simek should have some parts for the gear change gate, so you would have to finish it. You can find his contact in Yowl at the local section contact details page). I made some drawings and dimensions  of the gear change lever for Zoran Vaskovic, so I could resend you the photo, if you wish to make it. If I remember well, I think Alan Noakes made gates as well, I’m not sure if lever as well.

I don’t know if it’s possible to buy ready made bowdens, but I bought the bowden, steel cable and soldered the endings, it was also easier to make the lengts as I need. And they works well, I did over 18000 km and soldering holds perfectly.

    All the best, Martin

    Hi Martin,

yes, I know. I still prefer 20″, fits more to the character of the bike. And I can imagine I would be exactly kind of the person, who would sega 10 shillings by keeping standard wheels. Yes, it’s paradox, as now I have to buy new rims, I have many 19″ rims, but only one 20″ which is drilled for 36 spokes. I got this one with Velocette KSS MkI front wheel. Weird, as MkI used 19″ or 21″… 🙂

Thanks a lot, all the best,

    Martin

I could find Ensign Universal 3.00 x 20″. Avon 3,50 x 21 is not that often usual as well. Anyway, looks like Ensign could be the right option. As I know, some people use 19″ instead of 20, but I also think the 3 x 20″ looks just perfect on the bike and has correct late 20″s light look.

I was thinking if it would be easier to find 3.00 x 21″ which could be better option than 19″, but as I can see, it’s similar problem as with 3.oo x 20″. There could be option to use Avon AM26 road rider MkII, but I don’t like it on vintage period bike. So Ensign 3 x 20″ rear will be perfect, with speedmaster at front.

    Thanks, all the best, Martin

Dear Dave, thanks a lot. There are 26×3 for both. Am I right to recount this to 3.00 x 20″? Just to be sure if this is correct recounting.

    Thanks, Martin

ok, now it works, don’t know what was the problem in my previous post that didn’t show up, probably the links. So shortly agai my experience wirh vintage replica taps:

It’s push on-push off type, not sure if your taste. I’m using them at my 27 flyer for last two years since I finished my bike and never had problem. My friend who use ut at his 30 flyer for over 10 years just had to change the rubber-cork once, but you can buy extra. So no problem with that, I have also spares ready, in case.

Last year I made my extra oil tank and used some old tap – conical type. And oil was everywhere. So this winter I bought another one again, dry under the bike.

You can choose from many types, with reserve, without, with filter etc.

You can find it in the “metal parts” category. Separate is with the reserve and withou.

    Good luck,

    Martin

    Hallo Mathew,

it is 1/2 x 20 tpi on my 27 kite forks. I guess 1929 should have the same size.
