This is an interesting post, with some very good points raised. May I add some factual information for your consideration.
I have been mem sec of the SOC since 2004, and during this time the membership has always been steady in the low 700’s. When I took over it was 728. The peak was about 735 in 2008, in 2015 it was 702. So a decline, but not as dramatic as has been suggested, especially if you take into account machines sold and the average age of our membership. The problem for our membership levels is that every year about 50 leave, and 40 fresh members join. It would be useful to find a way to keep at least some of those leavers, sadly the majority go without explanation, but some do come back years later. It’s easier to keep an existing member than to find a new one, so the Club has to provide good reason and unique facilities to make all members sure to renew.

Hi Kevin. I know there were other issues with the Scott Club continuing to hold their event at Abbotsholme, one major concern being the fall off in attendance. I may have been premature in asking for suggestions of possible new venues, I presume the future of Club “accommodation events” will depend on how well attended Shuttleworth turns out to be. There is no question of anyone not being the right person for the job, in fact, I have it on the list to ask your advice (read “help”) on making this event more Silk friendly. So, I’m sorry to find out you’re not planning to attend.
The editor is the most important member of the committee. Yowl is all the majority of members see of our Club. In the first instance you should contact Eddie Shermer who I’m sure will be very pleased to hear from you.
Again, here I’m just the scribe and a helper, and these are just my views.

Sorry we will not be seeing you Eric, we’ll miss you. I have visited Shuttleworth and it’s an ideal spot for our weekend, with lots of interesting thing to see and do. But as you say, the location will not be ideal for everyone.
It’s been very difficult finding a suitable venue with affordable accommodation in the right location, we have to attempt to please all Club members, mission impossible! We are open to suggestions for the future, ideally situated in the Midlands or low North. All offers considered.
Richard Martin is the organiser and the main man, I am just the scribe, as he does not have access to the Internet.

Thanks Brian, I’ve corrected it.
We very much look forward to seeing you at the Abbotsholme weekend, but if you can’t manage more than one day away from your workshop, please make every effort to attend the the Club’s Annual Gathering on Sunday.
We welcome auto-jumblers large and small, please bring your unwanted spares along. We are delighted to see professional suppliers of Scott and related parts, and marvel at their considerable skills. This year, the Scott Owners Club Spares Scheme will be in attendance too. There is no charge for pitches, just the modest gate entry fee.
Eddie tells me the smaller car park (on the left as you enter the site) is out of use due to construction work. Please park with due consideration, and take heed of those directing you to the best parking space. Please make sure your vehicle is locked whilst unattended.
So is it a case of…. “not a Rep as we know it, Jim”??
Please excuse me, we’ve got Ozzie visitors, 8.30, pitch black, still waiting on the BBQ, and too many glasses of red wine.
Beam me up, Scottie!
Many thanks, I’ll pass this on to our member.

A reminder, 2014 Annual Gathering, Sunday 17th August, 10am at Abbotsholme School.
I’ve sent Lewis a set of photos showing the 2012 recipients, and I believe we have a similar set for 2011 somewhere. I’m away on hols at the moment, I’ll attempt to locate the 2011 set as soon as I get back.
Err… didn’t anyone see the article on this in February 2013 Yowl?
Mark Wills of the VMCC Taverners Section has confirmed a space is reserved for a Scott Owners Club stand at the 2013 Founder’s Day on Sunday 21st July.
He also tells us… ” please go to the The Taverners website http://www.thetaverners.com and download an entry form to get your free entry pass – new arrangement this year where each exhibitor enters and rides around the arena to get free entry to the event”
Please take note, and let everyone know who might plan to exhibit a Scott machine. I believe passes are allocated on a “first come” basis.
There is a article on Allan Jefferies, written by his son Nick, in The Classic Motor Cycle, October 1994. It mentions the Argentina venture….
“As Scott only paid spasmodically he went off to ride speedway. However, his main job was working as a mechanic for Frank Varey at the Belle View track in Manchester.
He went out to Argentina late in 1930 as a reserve rider and Varley’s mechanic. And in later years my father used to travel to South America to look after the American speedway ace Sprouts Elder. In 1930 they rode Scotts, and tried to interest the local police in buying some. A standard model accompanied them for demonstration purposes, but they substituted Varley’s speedway engine before the test took place. The police were most impressed and ordered 50 machines”.
Allan Jefferies died in 1978, but his sons Nick and Tony were TT winners in the 70’s, and are probably still about.
